a coming-of-age drama

Mozart is presented here as an artist of exceptional talent who, in spite of his gift – or perhaps because of it – struggles with life’s simplest challenges. The production tries to show the man behind the cult, the clichés and the kitsch that have sprung up around the historical human being.

Synopsis A rock star of the Roccoco era

The central figure is Mozart, the artistic genius who struggles to free himself from his loving but tyrannical father and to escape the paternalist rule of family and society so that he can finally develop as both a musician and a person – a drama about growing up.

Mozart himself appears as two different characters: as Wolfgang, the man, and as Amadé, the genius. The adorable “porcelain child” that Amadé supposedly once was, dogs the adult Mozart everywhere he goes. Little Amadé is omnipresent in the life of Mozart the man - even if only the audience and Mozart himself can see him.

Amadé, the child prodigy, composes non-stop, while the adult Wolfgang is out gambling, carousing, loving and living, daring to break out of the prison of social convention.

The story about success International hit returns

MOZART! The musical by the dream team of Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levaythrows light on the world’s most famous composer both as a historical human being and as a legendary figure of classical music. Mozart is presented here as an artist of exceptional talent who, in spite of his gift – or perhaps because of it – struggles with life’s simplest challenges. MOZART! – a coming-of-age drama – tries to show the man behind the cult, the clichés and the kitsch that have sprung up around the historical human being.

With MOZART!, written by the star team of Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze, a VBW in-house production returns to Vienna in a new and revamped version. Since its world premiere at the Theater an der Wien on 2 October 1999 – and following 500 triumphant performances in Vienna – the show has been seen by 1.9 million people in seven different countries (Germany, Japan, Sweden, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Hungary).

A new song has been added to the musical especially for the Vienna production. On the opening night in September, audiences will hear for the first time a love duet between Mozart and Constanze. Director Harry Kupfer and set designer Hans Schavernoch, who worked on the original Vienna production, will renew their collaboration in staging this new and expanded version of the musical.
