A graduate of the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, he has been working as a 1989 in Vienna as an artist and teaches at the Institute for Popular Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts. His work as a conductor includes the musical direction of MAMMA MIA!, the new version of the musical HAIR (VBW), the TV show "Ein Saitensprung" with Rainhard Fendrich, DER BAUER ALS MILLIONÄR (Landestheater Linz), FALCO MEETS AMADEUS (Seefestspiele Wörthersee) as well as BARBARELLA, FORBIDDEN RONACHER (VBW) and a new version of CABARET with Maria Bill (Volkstheater Wien). Herbert Pichler has been conductor of the "Star Orchestra" since the first season of the ORF show "Dancing Stars" in 2005 and also fulfilled this function in 2007 for the ORF broadcast "Musical! - The Show". Other examples of his varied musical activities include orchestral projects with Thomas Quasthoff, concerts with the East German punk Nina Hagen, the mdw project CUBE, musical direction at the NESTROY awards ceremonies, collaboration with the Mozarteum Chamber Orchestra, etc. Arrangement work for, among others: DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, BARBARELLA (VBW, Additional Arrangements), "Dancing Stars", the opening of the Vienna Festival with Nina Hagen, Marianne Faithful and Chaka Kahn (2005) and for the opening of the Life Ball 2006. As a musician, Herbert Pichler has worked on CD productions and TV shows with artists such as Nina Hagen, The Supremes, Harry Belafonte, Patricia Kaas, Placido Domingo, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the RSO Orchestra, Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Dave Stewart, Jim Steinman, Simply Red, Gloria Gaynor and practically all the well-known musical stars.
