Stephen Schwartz Music and Lyrics

Stephen Schwartz is an American composer and lyricist. His musicals are performed on Broadway and all over the world, with productions in Germany of WICKED, THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, GODSPELL, THE BAKER’S WIFE and CHILDREN OF EDEN. In 1974, the Theater an der Wien presented the German premiere of his Broadway hit PIPPIN.  With Alan Menken as composer, he has written the lyrics for numerous Disney films, including “Pocahontas”, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Enchanted”. He was composer and lyricist for DreamWorks’ animated film “The Prince of Egypt”.  He is also active in the field of classical music, writing the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein’s work of musical theatre, MASS, and composing the opera SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON. Stephen Schwartz was recently immortalised with a star on the “Hollywood Walk of Fame”, and has also been inducted into the “Theater Hall of Fame” and the “Songwriters Hall of Fame”.  He has won numerous awards, including three Oscars and three Grammys, and in 2015 he was presented with the Isabelle Stevenson Award, which is a special Tony Award. In 2008, an extensive biography of the life and work of Stephen Schwartz was published under the title “Defying Gravity”.
