Michael Kunze is an internationally successful writer and playwright, book and television author, songwriter and librettist. With ELISABETH, DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES, MOZART!, REBECCA, MARIE ANTOINETTE and LADY BESS, he created a new European form of popular musical theater: the drama musical. He also wrote the German versions of international musical successes such as EVITA, CATS, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, A CHORUS LINE, DER KLEINE HORRORLADEN, INTO THE WOODS, KUSS DER SPINNENFRAU, ASPECTS OF LOVE, SUNSET BOULEVARD, Disney's THE HUNCHBACK, Disney's THE LION KING, MAMMA MIA!, Elton John's AIDA and WICKED. After completing his studies, Michael Kunze began working as a songwriter and record producer at the end of the 1960s and quickly advanced to become one of the most sought-after German songwriters and producers worldwide. Stars such as Peter Maffay, Nana Mouskouri, Udo Jürgens, Peter Alexander and Münchener Freiheit owe their greatest hits to him. He wrote countless German as well as numerous international top hits and produced pop performers such as Silver Convention, Herbie Mann, Julio Iglesias, Gilbert Bécaud and Sister Sledge. Together with Sylvester Levay, he was the first German to receive a Grammy for the song "Fly, Robin, Fly," which reached #1 on the U.S. charts. Numerous awards, 79 gold and platinum records and the ECHO 2005 bear witness to this stage of his career. With ELISABETH, Michael Kunze advanced to become the most successful German-language author for musical theater, and his subsequent works TANZ DER VAMPIRE, MOZART!, REBECCA, LADY BESS and MARIE ANTOINETTE also became international successes. He was the first German musical author to reach Broadway. In January 2010, Michael Kunze's pop oratorio "Die 10 Gebote" (music: Dieter Falk) premiered in Dortmund's sold-out Westfalenhalle in front of 10,000 visitors; a stage version entitled Moses followed. In 2017, the choral event "Luther" toured Germany with a total of 8,000 participants with great success. In addition to several books, TV shows, plays and political cabaret texts, Michael Kunze has also written an opera. He is a member of the German Dramatists Union and the US Dramatists Guild.
