Hugh Vanstone Lighting Design
Hugh Vanstone is one of England’s leading lighting designers and has created the lighting design for over 160 productions in the West End and on Broadway. He has won a Tony award and three Olivier Awards for Best Lighting Design: in 2004 for PACIFIC OVERTURES (at the Donmar Warehouse), in 2000 for “The Graduate” (in the West End) and “The Cherry Orchard” (National Theatre), and in 1998 for “The Unexpected Man” (Royal Shakespeare Company) and “The Blue Room” (Donmar Warehouse). His work includes “A Doll’s House” (Donmar Warehouse), MARIA STUART (at the Donmar Warehouse and on Broadway), “The God of Carnage” (Gielgud Theatre, Broadway and UK tour), DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES in Oberhausen, SHREK (Broadway) und “Small Change” (Donmar Warehouse). He has also worked on the following theatre productions: “Grand Hotel”, “As You Like It”, “Uncle Vanya”, “Juno and the Paycock”, “Orpheus Descending”, “The Front Page” and “Insignificance” (Donmar), THE THREE MUSKETEERS (Boston, USA), “The Pain and the Itch” (Royal Court), EPITAPH FOR GEORGE DILLON (Comedy), PRESENT LAUGHTER and “Rafta, Rafta… Market Boy” (National Theatre); “Boeing, Boeing” (Broadway and London, UK tour) and “Spamalot” (Australia, Las Vegas, Broadway, US tour and London). In the opera world, Hugh Vanstone is known for his lighting designs for “Dialogues of the Carmelites” (ENO), “Carmen” (Opera North) and “The Bartered Bride” (Glyndebourne). Besides his work in musicals, Hugh Vanstone is equally active in opera, ballet, exhibitions and architectural projects. He is Associate Artist at the Old Vic theatre in London.
